We love food. Food makes us happy and keeps us going. But sometimes food keeps us from going if you catch my drift. There’s plenty of reasons behind distressin’ intestines. It could be your medication, an inactive lifestyle or it could be the food you’re eating. There are a surprising amount of foods that keep backin’ it up, and not in a good way. Processed foods and an excessive dairy products are frequent offenders. I know, all the yummy stuff.
So what are some things you can eat to stay regular? Look for foods that have plenty of fiber. Fiber is essential to our diet because it helps food to move quickly through our intestines. It also absorbs water to help keep away that unwelcome constipation! Everyone knows dark green veggies are a great source of fiber and there are some medicines that will get the job done in a pinch. But perhaps you don’t like green veggies (shame on you) or don’t want to bother with medication. You know I got you! Here are five tasty and fiber rich snacks to keep you regular. I bet you have a few of these in your kitchen right now!
Can I get a whoop whoop?! Now we have a legitimate excuse to gorge ourselves on popcorn. Not that I needed one. Now don’t go piling on the salt and butter. I know it’s tough, I love me some butter too. Instead, opt for the air-popped popcorn and you’ve got yourself a yummy source of whole grains, a natural and effective solution to constipation. According to Livestrong.com, “Three cups of air-popped popcorn contain 3.6 grams of fiber, which is roughly the same amount of fiber found in one cup of cooked brown rice or a cup of cooked oatmeal.” Hmm popcorn has one of the same benefits as oatmeal? Yah, you got this.
2. Ground Flax Seed
Don’t underestimate these little guys! They may be small, but they are very effective and have great health benefits. Their hearty fiber content helps to steady the passage of food through our intestines. Did I mention they have cardiovascular benefits as well? Learn more about these super seeds here. In order for them to be effective you need to grind them up. My family uses the flat blade on our Magic Bullet to make this a little easier. Be sure to store them in the freezer to preserve them. Try adding them to your smoothies or your oatmeal in the morning. But I’m warning you now, just use a little bit, trust me. You’ll be feeling light as a feather in no time.
I remember watching this episode of Jimmy Neutron when I was a kid. Jimmy’s dad Hugh said, “Candy is dandy but fruit helps you poop!” I found that hilarious as a kid, but it’s true! Honestly, any berries will do as berries tend to have a higher dose of fiber so you have plenty of choices. One serving of strawberries contains about 3 grams of fiber which is pretty good! Berries are a sweet low-calorie treat that most of us enojy all the time in our smoothies, desserts, or just au natural. So keep doin’ you boo.
If you’re not nuts about nuts… you’re not alone. I personally only like peanuts and pistachios. And I of course looove peanut butter. But cashews, almonds, and pecans, I just can’t. But that’s ok! Nuts in general are not only a good source of fiber, more specifically they are a source of soluble fiber. Soluble fibers (also found in beans, oats, and apples) keep things running smoothly as well as reduce gas and bloating for most people. So it’s ok to just a pick a few that you like. If you don’t like them at all, that’s cool too. As for me, I’ll be sticking to my peanuts, pistachios and my Macadamia nut cookies sans the Macadamia nuts. Don’t judge.
Fist bump if you liked avocado before it was cool. For the past few years, EVERYBODY has been obsessed with avocado and spreading it on every possible edible surface. Many people may wonder, if this little green beauty is worthy of the hype. Seriously. It is. Just half an avocado contains 4 grams of fiber which is 11% of daily dose needed for men and 16% for women. Just one more reason for this baby to be trending.
